The Training of the Voice in the Indian Tradition

June 12 - 17, 2018

The Training of the Voice in the Indian Tradition

We will explore the depths and colours of the seven notes of music, according to the philiosophy of Hindustani Classical Music.

We will together learn to develop our voices amake them more harmonious. We will also learn about projecting our voices outwards and experiment with postures and movements that enhance and encourage vocal expression. We will learn a chant everday, finally presenting all the chants in a small concert on the last day of the workshop.
This beautiful practice can be applied onto our daily life and communication with others. It is the ancient music of India that has passed down through generations, as an art and life practice.

Hania Mariam Luthufi

Hania Mariam Luthufi spent 10 years of her life learning Jazz, blues and American folk and then moved to India to learn about North Indian Cassical Music and has been captivated by it ever since. She now lives in Kolkata, learning the vocal Style of the Patiala Gharana, under the wings of her Guru (Master) Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya.

Thank you for your interest in the workshops at the Tiyatro Medresesi. We will be glad to work with you together. We hope that you will be part of the peaceful atmosphere during your stay in the Medrese and live in harmony with other guest participants.

We will send you a detailed letter later but we want to briefly inform you about the life at Medrese; living and working spaces of the Medrese.
It is very easy to arrive here. It takes only an hour from İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport. What is hard for our guests is to leave from Medrese.

The climate is hot at Şirince in summer as it is everywhere. One cannot stay under sun. But the corridors of the Medrese are cool like air-conditioned, though there is none. Nights are cooler. It usually do not rain till September. We guess it won’t rain this summer too.

We serve a healthy diet at Medrese. Our menu consists of lots of olive oil dishes and vegetables. If we have meat on the menu, we cook on a seperate pot, considering the vegans and vegetarians.

We have lots of unique rooms and dormitories. Please check out our page about our rooms and dormitories, in order to have more info and pick the right room for yourself.

Hope to see you at the Medrese…
